Philosophy

1. Never forget: Karate begins with rei and ends with rei.

2. There is no first attack in karate.

3. Karate supports righteousness.

4. Understand yourself then understand others.

5. The art of developing the mind is more important than the art of applying technique.

6. The mind needs to be freed.

7. Misfortunes arise out of negligence (laziness).

8. Do not think that karate training is only in the Dojo.

9. It will take your entire life to learn karate.

10. Transform everything into Karate; therein lies its exquisiteness.

11. Genuine Karate is like hot water; it cools down if you do not keep heating it.

12. Do not think about winning; think rather that you do not have to lose.

13. Transform yourself according to the opponent.

14. The secret of combat resides in the art of directing it (strategy).

15. Think of the hands and feet as swords.

16. Once you leave the shelter of home, there are a million enemies.

17. Beginners must master basic stances; natural body positions are for the advanced.

18. Postures are for the beginner later they become natural positions.

19. Do not forget the correct control of the dynamics [of power], the elasticity [of the body] and the speed [of the technique].

20. Always strive to be good at the application of everything that you have learned.

Master Gichin Funakoshi

Fudo Myo

This is our Dojo’s protector and Deity of luminescent wisdom, known by some in the west as the “Wisdom King”. Fudo turns anger and frustrations into salvation. The devil subduing sword in the right hand represents wisdom cutting through ignorance. The rope held in the left hand is also a metaphor for the binding up of inner and outer demons thus removing all obstacles to enlightenment,

He is standing on a rock, which also has significance as Fudo is seen as having “immovable” faith.
